If this sounds like a bad idea for a marketing project, please write another idea down below, thanks! –
My idea was that My friend and I could create a (fake) record label company as a marketing project. What would be the things involved in this and how would i get started, what would be the steps?
(its a very free environment so there really is no rubric or boundaries
thanks soooo much! please help!
I thinks its actually a very good idea.

join this online community, www.soundclick.com its designed for upcoming artists. you can really get your music out there. Also, try myspace, although soundclick would probaly be better considering its focus is just music, rather than a mixed community

Whats the best way of doing a market research for music? How and where do i start doing the research? Also how can i create demand for my music? How can i make consumers feel that they need to have my music over another artist’s?
Thank you.
The old fashioned way was to start playing local gigs, build a following and get discovered. These days lots of artists are using Myspace to successfully market themselves. The only way to “create” a demand for your music is to have a word-of-mouth “buzz” about it. Some try to create that by going into chat rooms and social networking sites to talk up the artist. Some even pay others to do this. But the only way to be successful is if your music moves listeners and they can connect to it. That is how you “make consumers feel that they need my music over another artist’s”. If your music sucks, the best research and marketing in the world won’t help you.
So first you need to make sure your music is great. And research can help you with that. If you want to start small, get a group of 10-15 people together that you don’t know well (friends of friends) and offer them lunch and free music if they listen to some songs and answer some questions. Ask which songs they like most, what they like and dislike about it, on what occasions they would listen to it, and whether they would buy it. It’s best if you are not the one asking the questions because if they know you are the artist but don’t like it they may lie to not hurt your feelings.
You can do something similar on a larger scale through Myspace or another online site. Get people to listen to some streaming tracks and if they answer a survey (try the survey monkey site) you will give them free downloads. Based on the response you can taylor your music to what people like most. Good luck!
